He was replaced by Dennis Quaid, but Liotta is still mentioned in the director’s “Acknowledgements” during the end credits. I was very excited about this movie, even though I am not a big fan of Fargeat’s debut film “Revenge”. I liked her as a director, but not as a screenwriter. Although the film had an interesting visual style, the script was poor. stupid, and the characters were uninteresting. However, she has improved significantly since her last film. “The Substance” looks amazing, the cinematography, soundtrack, editing, set design, and even the costumes are well thought out. The script is also great (she won the award for best screenplay in Cannes for the film “The Substance”), the decisions made by the characters are understandable – they result from their behavior. determination in achieving their goals. I also really liked Demi Moore’s performance (it’s worth mentioning that I didn’t think she was a good actress at all, but after watching this movie my first thought was that maybe she’s not a bad actress, she just starred in bad movies), it’s definitely the highlight of her career. Margaret Qualley is great as usual. Even Dennis Quaid, despite his short screen time, gives a funny and engaging performance. Probably the most talked about part of this movie is the gore and body horror elements. And yes, I have to admit that this movie is quite extreme and it may be hard for some viewers to watch. Personally, I didn’t feel disgusted or anything during these scenes because I’m a big fan of disturbing movies, so I’m used to it, but I understand that for others it may be a tough journey. It proves how great the make-up artist did her job (I would be happy if this movie was nominated for an Oscar for “Best Makeup and Hairstyling”) and how sick and twisted Fargeat’s imagination is. Overall, I definitely recommend this movie. It may not be for everyone, but it’s worth checking out and seeing for yourself, because even if you don’t like it, you can’t deny that it’s not one of the most crazy, extreme, and interesting movies of the year (or even the decade).
