With a completely redesigned rendering engine, Lumion 2023 marks the beginning of a new chapter. Back in October 2022, we revealed that ray tracing was coming to Lumion – a huge undertaking that meant completely rebuilding our render engine from the ground up. Today, the time has finally come – Lumion 2023 is live!

Lumion 2023 is unlike previous versions of the software. By completely redesigning our rendering engine to include ray tracing in addition to rasterization, we can now offer a platform that is faster and easier to develop than ever before.

The release of Lumion 2023 represents a complete fundamental change for the software in many ways. Powered by a hybrid rendering engine with rasterization and ray tracing, Lumion 2023 helps you achieve the best quality results, regardless of hardware. So, even if you don’t have a ray-tracing capable graphics card, you can still see a significant increase in Lumion’s rendering quality with improved rasterization technology for any building architecture, landscape or interior design.
Ultimately, it’s not about the technology itself, but how it’s used for a higher purpose. Whether it’s developing a plan, exploring ideas, or presenting your vision, this goal is entirely up to you.
Introducing ray tracing v0.9
Unlike rasterization, ray tracing technology doesn’t require clever tricks to mimic reality – it calculates how light behaves in the real world. When the effect is turned on, renders automatically include more realistic indirect lighting, non-screen space reflections, contact shadows, and more. Lumion’s new ray tracing effect lets you control the number of patterns and bounces, giving you more control over the end result.
See your design in a new light
Lumion 2023’s new lighting system opens up a world of possibilities, enabling a more natural-looking plaster.
Reflections now work automatically when the ray tracing effect is enabled. With ray tracing, curved surfaces show accurate reflection, so no reflection plane is needed. In the first implementation, the ray tracing effect does not support glass or water reflections.
Make your surfaces realistic
It’s often the smallest details that help you communicate your plan most effectively. Reflections on the facade. The light passing through the curtain. Wet cobblestone street. When the materials look real, the design comes to life. By fine-tuning these details with a few clicks, you can create a visualization experience that appeals to all your senses.
Improved material editor
The material editor has been significantly improved to provide greater control over material settings. The material editor in Lumion 2023 offers the following options
Additional material properties
Lumion 2023’s raster workflow allows you to control subsurface scattering. This gives objects a translucent effect, allowing light to penetrate the object and diffuse it subtly. You can also influence the shade of diffused light by assigning a color to the material map.
